- Does anyone know if the international
- shortwave broadcasters like the BBC, Radio
- Canada International and Radio Moscow, to mention
- a few, have e-mail addresses so that listeners can
- send in questions without having to use ordinary
- mail. If such a service exists is there a way of finding

- At "garbo.uwasa.fi" in "/pc/ham" there is jvfax50 available, which is not

- A few month ago I remember, jvfax60 was available at oak.oakland.edu.

- Hello,
- I've been trying to track down an article that I remember seeing some
- time ago, probably about 10 to 15 years back. I've search the libraries
- periodical guides and the QST indexes and have had no luck.
-
- The article was about constructing an audio filter to go between a
- receiver and a pair of stereo headphones. The filter was a low-pass to
- the left speaker and a high-pass to the right speaker. When you tune
- in a CW signal, the signal you're trying to copy will appear to be 'in front'
- of you, while other signals will be to your left or right.
-
- If you have a copy of the article, or can tell me what issue of what
- magazine it was in, please let me know.
-
- Thanks,

-
- C'mon, folks. This is old news. For those who missed it the first few
- times it appeared here, here it is one more time...
-
- The RS DSP unit is a great unit for the price.
-
- HOWEVER... it is NOT a noise reduction unit! It is advertised as one,
- but it does not do it. No, it does NOT work poorly. It does not work
- at all. The book even goes so far as to rate it at 20 db reduction.
- This is NOT true. Not even 1 db!
-
- The good news is that it is a great bandpass filter with 9 positions
- of selectable bandpass. It is also a great automatic notcher that
- handles multiple heterodynes. That feature alone makes it worth more
- than you pay at RS for it. That's why I say it is a great unit for the
- price.
-
- If you are expecting a noise reduction unit, skip it. If you want a
- good buy on a combination auto-notcher and bandpass filter, buy it!
-
- I'm working with one of the Ft.Worth people now to see what can be
- done about the misrepresentation on this product. I really had the
- impression they took an interest in my complaint about this, but I'm
- not going to get very far from the oxygen bottle, either. He is
- supposed to get back to me again soon (yes, he has initiated calls to
- me).

-
- OK, here it is.... It is documented, but everyone would prefer to just
- postulate.
-
- Land line telegraphy preceeded radio. People with seriously impaired
- sending were refered to a being "ham fisted" (That's right, as in having
- a touch on the key that would tend to indicate an extra 40-50 pounds of
- weight for momentum).
-
- Enter wireless technology. The landline was king, wireless was a new (and
- misunderstood) thing. The only people that saw a real need for it was the
- Navy and a handful of experimentors. A large number of the experimentors
- were starting in at the ground floor so to speak in that they did not have
- several years of landline experience. As a result, a majority of experi-
- mentors tended to have lousy fists. (i.e. ham fisted. Do you see this
- coming?) There was no FCC per se to designate who ran on what frequency.
- In fact with spark, and beginning C.W., (meaning continous wave, as in the
- type of output, not just meaning "on-off keyed signal") things got pretty
- hectic as to who was on what frequency(ies).
-
- Hence the reference, "Here come those damned hams again". (As usual, the
- tendency to abbreviate anything to the minimum number of letters.) The
- amateurs (but really experimentors, they were amateurs only in that they
- were not commercial operators) took the term ham as their own. Much the
- same way that bug which had its origin as a truely terrible morse sending
- device became synomous with the vibroplex semi-automatic keyer.
-
- Meanwhile, through history (and even amateur radio suffers from revisionism)
- people have tried to make the term ham something it isn't. It isn't an
- acronym (ergo, it is not HAM or H.A.M.) Nor is it a bastardization of some
- other term. It is simple ham. Short for ham fisted, a derrogatory term for
- someone sending sloppy code.
-
- Did I mentioned documented? Read about it in _The History of the Vibroplex
- Bug_ and in the book _200 Meters and Down_.
-
- What does HAM mean? It was an abbreviation that Craig Shergold used to ask
- the postman every morning as he waited to become famous. "Have Any Mail?"

- Nope, it's not illegal for repeaters to be closed or private. It IS
- unwholesome, however, to have virtually an entire band's worth of
- repeaters closed and private, excluding the average ham. These repeaters
- are rarely used, and appear to serve as often as not as private
- communications services for the repeater owners. In an area like So Cal
- where there are lots of hams and crowded frequencies on 2 meters, it is
- obvious to most of us that the present arrangement is far from satisfactory.
-
- You are quite right that repeaters are often/usually privately owned.
- But the frequencies they utilize are in the public domain for licensed
- hams.
-
- Personally, I believe that repeaters should be allowed to be closed or
- private at the whim of the owner. But I also believe that closed and
- private repeaters should simply not be coordinated, as in most cases such
- repeaters do not represent optimum use of the spectrum. Many, I'm quite
- sure most, amateurs in the area agree with me, and that is what it will take.
-
-
-
- : AND, out of curosity, just exactly who is the "we" that are going
- : to do something about the unwholesomeness of closed repeaters?
- : And just what and when would "we" do it?
-
- Stay tuned :-)

- : PS: I don't live in California and have only very, very rarely used a
- : repeater - open or closed, during my own 30+ years as a ham; so I
- : admittedly don't know much about the problems which may exist there
- : and don't have much of an opinion - other than to ask what others
- : mean by theirs. ;-)
